FROM a Maruti 800 to a Lancer, then on to Skoda, Optra, Mini Cooper and now the first Maybach in India — it's enough to give any girl the thrill.

Janhavi, the daughter of Rasiklal Manikchand Dhariwal, Chairman of the Manikchand Group of Companies, has been gifted the Maybach for her 21st birthday.

The two-tone Nayarit Silver and Himalaya mid-grey saloon is equipped with the ultimate in automotive technology and has been handpicked by Janhavi for Rs 5.6 crore. Everything that the discerning driver and passenger could possibly require in terms of comfort, entertainment, information and communications has been fitted as standard: From a DVD player and TV receiver to refrigerator compartment and partition doors, all have been fitted into the MH12 CK1799.

A total of two dozen additional options aimed at tailoring the saloons' technical equipment to individual tastes, including parktronic, the keyless-go access, locking system and active seat ventilation, have been added.

The high-end luxury saloon has a total of 10 airbags: two adaptive airbags with two-stage gas generators for the front passengers plus four side bags and two large window bags on either sides of the interior. The three-point seat belt with automatic comfort fit, belt tensioners and beltforce limiters are integrated into the seat and provide full protection to the passengers at all times irrespective of the seat position.

Janhavi, currently a trainee at the Manikchand group, is a third year B.Com student at BMCC Mumbai. Besides studies, her passion is social work at Veerayatan, an NGO in Bihar which is into child welfare.

Dhariwal, taking the keys of the first Maybach from Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of DaimlerChrysler India HansMichael Huber, said his passion for cars started way back in 1957. He kick-started his collection with a studbacker, the rage of the 1950's, priced at Rs 900. Now, his stable boasts of all models of cars in the country as also a BMW 7 series, four Mercedes-Benz, a Lexus and a Jaguar. The collection is updated whenever any new model hits the road, Dhariwal said. "The Maybach will be handed over to Janhavi when she is fully confident of its technicalities," he said.

What is a Psychopomp?

A psychopomp is a guide, whose primary function is to escort souls to the afterlife, but they can also serve as guides through the various transitions of life. The term originates from the Greek wordspompos (conductor or guide) and psyche (breath, life, soul, or mind). Stories of psychopomps are widespread throughout the mythological tales, religious texts, sacred narratives, and real-life stories of people around the world.

Some of the most well-known psychopomps include the Greek god Hermes, the Egyptian jackal-headed god Anubis, the Archangel Michael, and the female Valkyries of Teutonic legend. A wide variety of angels, animals, birds, and other helpful beings have also been known to act as guides to the afterlife. And it is not uncommon to hear of former ancestors and friends who come to greet the deceased at the time of death. Such guidance generally guarantees a successful transition for the soul, but there are other times when additional aid is needed. This has long been a role of the shaman and others with the ability to travel to the spirit realms and offer help to those in need.

It is important to know that every single human being, from the moment of birth until the moment when we make the transition and end this physical existence, is in the presence of guides or guardian angels who will wait for us and help us in the transition from life to life after death.

Throughout much of human history, such archetypal escorts have been of great comfort to the dying. They confirm that there is some form of existence after the death of the body, and that a compassionate being will be waiting to offer their assistance through the transition. Unfortunately, many of the myths and rituals that once contained images of psychopomps and helped prepare people for this final rite of passage seem to be largely lost or forgotten in the Western world—a world that is also plagued with fears of dying.

At present, there seems to be a resurgence of interest in psychopomps. This is due to a number of factors, including the reemergence of this archetype in the field of psychology, the spread of eastern religious teachings over the past century, the reports of guides from people who have had an NDE or other death-like experience, the modern ability to hypnotically regress a person to a time between lifetimes, and the renewed interest in shamanism around the world.

There is also a growing number of people who are once again learning how to fulfill the sacred role of the psychopomp. Some choose to offer their assistance in conjunction with their function as a hospice worker, or as a midwife to the dying. Others prefer to focus more on helping those who may be trapped in the spirit realms, and go by such titles as soul rescuer, deathwalker, spiritual guide, or shaman. There are also individuals who quietly offer aid to those in transition as they go about their routine jobs in hospitals, nursing homes, and other such locations. And many of use are currently discovering how we can apply such skills to help both people and the plant as we go through the various earth changes that are now occurring.

We know from many of the myths and stories that psychopomps come in a wide variety of forms, and often present themselves in a manner that is compatible with the beliefs of the person in need. According to my research they do frequently share some common characteristics.

Psychopomps are generally:

adept at guiding others through such transformative experiences as death
compassionate, nonjudgmental, and friendly
experienced border crossers and walkers between the worlds
tricksters who will do whatever is required to achieve their goals
shapeshifters who can change their appearance to match the setting and the times
arbiters of change for individuals and the culture
magical beings who can facilitate healing in unexpected ways.

Bart Becht to retire as Chief Executive Officer
Rakesh Kapoor of RB to be appointed as new CEO

The Board of Reckitt Benckiser Group plc (RB) today announces the retirement of Bart Becht as CEO and is pleased to announce the appointment of Rakesh Kapoor as CEO designate. Rakesh Kapoor has a 25 year career with RB and is currently executive vice president global category development at RB and an Executive Committee member

Rakesh Kapoor becomes CEO effective 1 September 2011 with Bart Becht staying on as part time adviser to Rakesh and the Board until September 2012 to ensure a smooth transition.

Rakesh Kapoor joined RB in India in 1987 and was appointed to the Executive Committee in 2006 to lead the two key drivers of RB's continued above industry-average growth – its global Powerbrand strategies and innovations. Prior to this Rakesh had a highly successful career in RB, including leading the UK and Northern Europe business to the best financial performance these businesses have ever delivered. He has extensive experience of the household, health and personal care categories, and an intimate knowledge and understanding of consumers and retailers in both developing and developed countries.

Having led the pan-European and largest health care business in RB, when also leading Northern Europe, he was one of the architects of the Boots Healthcare International acquisition in 2006 which transformed RB into a global consumer health care company. He has been equally involved in the recent SSL and Paras India acquisitions.

What is Onam?

Onam is the biggest and the most important festival of the state of Kerala. It is a harvest festival and is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm all over the state by people of all communities. According to a popular legend, the festival is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam.

Onam is celebrated in the beginning of the month of Chingam, the first month of Malayalam Calendar (Kollavarsham). This corresponds with the month of August-September according to Gregorian calendar.

Carnival of Onam lasts from four to ten days. First day, Atham and tenth day, Thiruonam are most important of all. Popularity and presentation of rich culture of the state during the carnival made Onam the National Festival of Kerala in 1961. Elaborate feasts, folk songs, elegant dances, energetic games, elephants, boats and flowers all are a part of the dynamic festival called Onam.

Government of India has taken due notice of this vibrant and colorful festival. It promotes Onam internationally in a big way and celebrates 'Tourist Week' for Kerala during Onam celebrations. Thousands of domestic and foreign tourists visit Kerala to be a part of Onam.

The Legend
Story goes that during the reign of mighty asura (demon) king, Mahabali, Kerala witnessed its golden era. Every body in the state was happy and prosperous and king was highly regarded by his subjects. Apart from all his virtues, Mahabali had one shortcoming. He was egoistic. This weakness in Mahabali's character was utilized by Gods to bring an end to his reign as they felt challenged by Mahabali's growing popularity. However, for all the good deed done by Mahabali, God granted him a boon that he could annually visit his people with whom he was so attached.

It is this visit of Mahabali that is celebrated as Onam every year. People make all efforts to celebrate the festival in a grand way and impress upon their dear King that they are happy and wish him well.

Onam Celebrations
Rich cultural heritage of Kerala comes out in its best form and spirit during the ten day long festival. It is indeed a treat to be a part of the grand carnival. People of Kerala make elaborate preparations to celebrate it in the best possible manner.

The most impressive part of Onam celebration is the grand feast called Onasadya, prepared on Thiruonam. It is a nine course meal consisting of 11 to 13 essential dishes. Onasadya is served on banana leaves and people sit on a mat laid on the floor to have the meal.

Another enchanting feature of Onam is Vallamkali, the Snake Boat Race, held on the river Pampa . It is a colourful sight to watch the decorated boat oared by hundreds of boatmen amidst chanting of songs and cheering by spectators.

There is also a tradition to play games, collectively called Onakalikal, on Onam. Men go in for rigorous sports like Talappanthukali (played with ball), Ambeyyal (Archery), Kutukutu and combats called Kayyankali and Attakalam. Women indulge in cultural activities. They make intricately designed flower mats called, Pookalam in the front courtyard of house to welcome King Mahabali. Kaikotti kali and Thumbi Thullal are two graceful dances performed by women on Onam. Folk performances like Kummatti kali and Pulikali add to the zest of celebrations.

Just days after the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) insisted that there is no medical value to marijuana, the White House appeared to contradict the position, saying in a report that there may actually be "some" medical value to "individual components of the cannabis plant" after all.

The statement was just a small part of the Office on National Drug Control Policy's yearly update on the progress of the drug war and its goals moving forward. Overall, the document only serves to affirm the federal prohibition of marijuana and what it calls "'medical' marijuana," which it still views as illegitimate.

But a single passage, under their "facts about marijuana," seems to loosen a bit from the generation-old line that there is no value to cannabis whatsoever.

"While there may be medical value for some of the individual components of the cannabis plant, the fact remains that smoking marijuana is an inefficient and harmful method for delivering the constituent elements that have or may have medicinal value," the report says.

Still, today's medical marijuana patients and proprietors don't have much to cheer in the report, as it goes on to insist that smoking the marijuana plant itself is harmful and dangerous, especially for teens, and perpetuates the largely discredited "gateway drug" theory.

Critics are likely to see the passage as offering a bit of wiggle room for major pharmesutical producers looking to grow marijuana to extract its psychoactive ingredient, THC, or other cannabinoid compounds that have been demonstrated to help abate symptoms of some chronic diseases, like wasting syndrome in AIDS patients or nausea in cancer patients.

In 2007, GW Pharmaceuticals announced that it partnered with Otsuka to bring "Sativex" -- or liquefied marijuana -- to the U.S. The companies recently completed Phase II efficacy and safety trials testing and began discussion with the FDA for Phase III testing. Phase III is generally thought to be the final step before the drug can be marketed in the U.S.

Sativex is the brand name for a drug derived from cannabis sativa. It's an extract from the whole plant cannabis, not a synthetic compound. Even GW defines the drug (.pdf) as marijuana.

Yet as the FDA is poised to approve the drug for Big Pharma, state-licensed medical marijuana dispensaries that provide relief for thousands of Americans are under attack by other federal agencies.

The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) has warned just as much, claiming that federal authorities may be looking to shift policy slightly, if only to legalize marijuana-based medicines for Big Pharma only, which could step in and potentially eradicate the medical marijuana market.

The Obama administration said in a recent memo that it fully intends to enforce the federal ban on marijuana, regardless of whether individual states have legalized its use for medical purposes.

It added that a 2009 memo, which seemed to take the pressure off state-authorized medical marijuana clinics and patients, was merely a guidance on the best uses of federal funds and not actually a change in policy.

An ABC News poll found last year that eight in 10 Americans favor legalizing medical marijuana.
